Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened in theaters this week, and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is already announced! The fourth film in the franchise is officially moving forward, and the studio anticipates it will be ready for release in Spring 2027.
If you want to know what’s bound to happen in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as usual, just watch the end credits sequence of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for a clue.
The #3 movie is expected to beat Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King in its domestic opening, $60M to $50M+.
The Original Films productions through two movies have grossed north of $725M worldwide with global home entertainment spend stands at $180M. Paramount+ also has a spinoff series, Knuckles.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog opened before the pandemic hit in 2020 and muscled through to $149M domestic, $320M worldwide. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released in 2022 made $191M domestic, $405.4M worldwide.
Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the few videogame feature adaptations which has worked at the box office, the other being Nintendo/Illumination’s Super Mario Bros Movie. The SEGA videogame first debuted in 1991.
The previous two Sonics received A CinemaScores. Jeff Fowler has directed all three Sonics to date with Ben Schwartz playing the Hedgehog, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Part 3 serves up double Carreys with the comedy blockbuster star playing Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather, with Keanu Reeves joining in as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog.
These movies are a ton of fun, and we have enjoyed the ride watching them as they release. I look forward to number 4!
