Ari Aster’s Next Nightmare Sets Release Window, and Its Closer Than You Think Find help us

Fans of the horror genre love Ari Aster’s work. He’s behind titles like Midsommar, Hereditary, Beau is Afraid, and many more that take audiences on a wild ride full of thrill, psychological horror, and jump scares in equal measure. Next, the filmmaker is bringing Eddington which has now found A24’s backing, the studio that also brought Aster’s other works to the big screen, and has set a release window for the feature.

Variety reports that A24 is eyeing a summer release for the film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler. Described as an “electric thriller,” the movie is also in contention for Cannes debut, which will also mark Aster’s debut at the festival. The feature began production in March 2024 and is currently in post-production. Per the report, A24 is bringing the film to the European Film Market in Berlin this month.

What Do We Know About ‘Eddington’?

The plot for Eddington has been kept tightly under wraps aside from the fact that it’s based on a “small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.” However, Aster previously shared bits of the film during a Reddit AMA revealing he had the script ready alongside Midsommar, further detailing,

“For like five years, I was trying to get that Western-noir dark ensemble comedy going. That won’t be the next one, by the way, though I do still want to make it very badly… Although it’s sort of a – I don’t know if you’d call it a revisionist Western. It’s contemporary; one foot is in the western and one foot is even more heavily in the noir genre. So it’s like a film noir ensemble western dark comedy.”

Given Aster’s storytelling prowess, a Western-noir dark comedy sounds deliciously evil. With an ensemble cast also starring Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., and Luke Grimes, the film has a lot of talent across the board, with compelling performers. Aster is writing, directing, and producing alongside long-time partner Lars Knudsen. Speaking of long-time partners, the movie reunites Aster with Phoenix, as the two last collaborated on Beau is Afraid. Phoenix was last seen in Joker 2 and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, both of which failed to amuse the audience. Aster’s new collaborators include Pascal, who is the talk of the town in fandom thanks to the latest trailer of Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He was last seen in Scott’s Gladiator 2 and will be seen next in the highly anticipated The Last of Us Season 2.

Stone won last year’s Oscar Best Actress for Poor Things, and was last seen in Yorgos LanthimosKinds of Kindness. Her collaboration with Aster is worth waiting for given her incredible acting chops, which perfectly suit the noir comedy genre. Butler was last seen in The Bikeriders and Dune: Part Two and garnered much appreciation for his performances.

Eddington will drop into theaters sometime this summer. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.
